FLOORING TYPE

Carpet, and where it still wins

I still fit more carpet than anything else in Dunfermline's bay-windowed semis and Victorian terraces. It's the only floor that genuinely warms a cold sandstone bedroom, and modern piles are tougher than people expect. It isn't right everywhere though, and I'll say so at the survey.

Why carpet still gets specified

Warmth, sound-deadening and comfort underfoot are hard to beat, especially over suspended timber floors in older Dunfermline and Cupar houses where a hard floor can feel cold and noisy through the joists.

Where we talk customers out of it

  • Boot rooms and back doors that take constant wet mud off the fields
  • Bathrooms and utility rooms with any standing water risk
  • Rental hallways getting heavy footfall between lets
  • Homes with dust-mite allergies wanting bare floors instead

Pile types worth knowing

  • Twist pile for busy family rooms
  • Saxony for a softer, more formal lounge look
  • Loop pile for durability under heavy furniture
  • Berber-style loops that hide vacuum marks well

Fife housing stock note

Ex-mining terraces around Kelty and Lochgelly often have slightly uneven suspended timber floors; a good gripper and underlay set-up evens out minor undulation without needing a full subfloor rebuild.

Fitting method

Stretched over gripper with a separate underlay layer, which is why refitting is usually straightforward compared with stuck-down floors.

Stair safety

Carpet on stairs gives grip and cushions falls, which matters in older Fife homes with steep, narrow staircases original to the build.
