80/20 Wool Twist Carpet — Why It Still Wins

An 80% wool, 20% synthetic twist is the benchmark domestic carpet. Wool fibres are naturally crimped, so the pile springs back instead of flattening into traffic lanes, and it holds colour without the sheen synthetics develop.

BLEND
80% wool for resilience, 20% nylon or polypropylene for strength
BEST FOR
Lounges, master bedrooms, stairs and landings
WEAK POINT
Stains from bleach-based cleaners and heavy pet accidents
TYPICAL LIFE
12–20 years in a domestic setting

Where wool genuinely outperforms

On a staircase and landing — the highest-wear carpet in most Fife homes — wool twist keeps its appearance years longer than a comparable polypropylene. That is appearance retention, not just wear: cheap carpet rarely wears through, it just looks tired and crushed.

Wool also buffers humidity and holds warmth, which matters in older stone-built and solid-wall properties where the room heats slowly.

Where we would not specify it

Households with a puppy in training, or anyone who wants to clean with bleach-based products, are better served by a solution-dyed polypropylene that can take it. We would rather sell you the right carpet twice than the wrong carpet once.

Weight and specification

  • Pile weight matters more than brand — 40oz and up for stairs and lounges
  • Twist level determines how well the pile resists crushing
  • Underlay quality changes perceived quality more than an extra £5/m² on the carpet
  • Ask for the same batch across connected rooms — dye lots vary
