What we check before fitting over underfloor heating
- That the screed or floor build-up has had its stated curing time before any heat cycle starts.
- That the system has been commissioned with a proper heat-up and cool-down cycle beforehand.
- That the chosen floor finish, adhesive and underlay are all explicitly rated for use with underfloor heating.
What goes wrong when steps are skipped
Turning heating on too early in a newly laid screed risks cracking it before it's fully cured. Fitting timber or laminate without checking the manufacturer's maximum surface temperature can cause boards to dry out, shrink and gap along their length, sometimes permanently. Standard carpet underlay not rated for underfloor heating can also insulate too effectively, reducing heating performance and potentially causing overheating at the element.
Which finishes suit underfloor heating well
Rigid-core SPC, engineered wood and tile-look LVT generally perform well over underfloor heating, provided the specific product is rated for it. Solid hardwood is more sensitive to temperature-driven movement and needs careful specification. Carpet works too, but needs a heating-rated underlay with sufficiently low thermal resistance to avoid trapping heat unhelpfully.
Fife reality: new builds with underfloor heating as standard
New developments around Duloch and Halbeath frequently specify underfloor heating on the ground floor as standard. We've seen cases where residents want a floor fitted before the heating system's been properly commissioned by the installer, and we'll always ask for confirmation of that step first rather than assume it's been done.
Ongoing use and expansion
- Expansion gaps need to be maintained around the room perimeter to allow for heat-driven movement.
- Sudden large temperature swings should be avoided where possible to reduce stress on the floor covering.
