What the R and PTV ratings actually mean
Safety flooring is sold against measured slip-resistance figures rather than marketing words. The R rating (R9 through R13) comes from a ramp test with a walker on an oiled surface, while PTV (pendulum test value) is the figure UK guidance leans on — PTV 36 or above is treated as a low slip risk in wet conditions.
Standard textured vinyl usually has no published figure at all. If slip resistance is the reason you're spending the money, we'll show you the sheet's tested numbers rather than describe it as non-slip and hope.
Why the aggregate has to go all the way through
Genuine safety vinyl carries carborundum, quartz or aluminium oxide particles distributed through the wear layer, not printed onto it. That's what keeps the slip rating as the floor wears, which is the whole point in a bathroom that will be walked wet twice a day for fifteen years.
An embossed-only vinyl feels grippy on fitting day and gradually polishes smooth at exactly the spots that get most traffic — in front of the shower, at the door, at the foot of the stairs.
Coving, capping and the detail that stops leaks
In a true wet room the sheet is turned up the wall over a cove former and finished with a capping strip, so there is no floor-to-wall joint at all. Every seam is hot-air welded with a matching weld rod, fusing the sheets into one continuous membrane.
This is the part that goes wrong on cheap installs. A coved edge that isn't supported by a former cracks at the radius, and a cold-sealed seam eventually opens. Both let water under the floor, where it does far more damage than the original spill ever would.
Domestic situations where we do recommend it
- Level-access wet rooms with no shower tray or upstand
- Bathrooms adapted for reduced mobility, wheelchair use or carer access
- Utility and boot rooms taking constant wet, muddy footfall
- Garden rooms and outbuildings used for grooming, pottery or workshop use
- Holiday lets and HMOs where a slip claim is a real liability
Living with the texture
The honest downside is underfoot feel and appearance. It reads as a practical, institutional-looking floor and it takes slightly longer to clean because the texture holds dirt in a way a smooth vinyl doesn't — a soft brush and a neutral cleaner, not a heavy detergent that leaves a slippery residue.
We always leave a sample in the room for a day or two. Half the people who ask for safety flooring choose it once they've stood on it barefoot; the other half decide a well-fitted sheet vinyl with a modest texture is the better compromise for a family bathroom.
