Fitting over garage slabs
Many Fife garages have a bare concrete slab with minor surface unevenness or old oil staining; rubber flooring generally tolerates this better than most residential floor coverings without extensive prep.
Thickness is a specification, not a preference
For a walking surface, 6mm is enough. For a gym with dumbbells and a rack, 10 to 15mm interlocking tiles are the usual answer, and for Olympic lifting or dropped loaded barbells you want 20mm or more, ideally with a dedicated platform on top.
Getting this wrong is expensive twice over: too thin and the slab beneath it cracks or the tiles split at the joints, too thick and internal doors, thresholds and a garage up-and-over track all need reworking around the new floor level.
Vulcanised sheet, crumb tiles and interlocking mats
- Vulcanised sheet rubber — hardest wearing, cleanest look, needs bonding and skilled seaming
- Recycled crumb tiles — cheapest per square metre, flecked appearance, some odour, ideal for gyms
- Interlocking puzzle mats — no adhesive, lift and take with you, joints can creep under heavy use
- Studded or hammered sheet — extra grip for wet plant rooms and workshops
- Stair treads and nosings — the one domestic use where rubber quietly outperforms everything else
What we do about a garage slab first
Most Fife garage slabs are laid straight onto hardcore with no damp-proof membrane, so moisture rises through the concrete continuously. Rubber tolerates that better than wood or vinyl, but if the tiles are loose-laid you'll still get condensation trapped underneath, so we test the slab and often loose-lay over a separating membrane rather than bonding down.
Old oil staining is dealt with by degreasing rather than sealing over, because petroleum residue attacks some adhesives and can soften certain rubber formulations from below.
Managing the smell sensibly
The odour is real and it's strongest with recycled crumb products in a warm, unventilated space. It fades over roughly two to six weeks. Ventilating hard for the first fortnight, keeping the room cool at first and airing the tiles outdoors for a day before fitting all shorten it considerably.
If the space connects directly to the house through an internal door, we'd steer you towards vulcanised sheet or a virgin-rubber tile, which smell far less than recycled crumb.
Cleaning and what damages it
Sweep or vacuum the grit, then damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. What actually harms rubber is solvent: white spirit, brake cleaner, petrol and strong degreasers will soften or discolour the surface, and so will prolonged UV through a south-facing garage window.
Point loads matter too. A car jack, a bike stand or a rack foot will indent thin tiles permanently, so we fit load-spreading pads under anything that concentrates weight on one spot.
Odour and off-gassing
New rubber flooring does carry a noticeable smell for the first weeks, which is worth factoring in if the space is attached to living accommodation.
