Choosing underlay by room, not by habit

Underlay isn't one product fitted everywhere out of convenience. A dense foam or rubber crumb suits a living room where comfort underfoot matters, while a thinner, moisture-resistant type belongs under LVT in a kitchen where spills are likely.

We treat it as a ventilation and insulation question first, not a flooring one. Covering it with a thicker product just moves the cold surface a few millimetres and hides the early warning.

Sealing that moisture in under a waterproof floor just moves the problem sideways into skirtings and door frames. Better to identify the cold bridge first and choose a covering, such as a breathable natural fibre or well-vented timber, that copes with the room as it actually is.

Where a property has flats stacked above one another, noise complaints usually trace back to the floor covering in the flat above rather than anything structural. Hard floors without an acoustic underlay carry footfall noise straight through a timber joist structure.
