Concrete slab reality
Most ex-council semis and terraces built from the late 1940s through the 1960s have a solid ground floor slab, often without the level of damp-proofing expected in newer construction. Moisture testing before fitting isn't a formality here — it genuinely affects which adhesives and finishes will hold.
Upstairs, two-storey ex-council houses typically switch to suspended timber, so a full-house flooring project usually spans two very different subfloor types.

This housing type is widespread across Cowdenbeath, Kelty, Lochgelly, parts of Glenrothes and the estates surrounding Rosyth and Inverkeithing. Very little of it is listed or in a conservation area, which generally makes flooring decisions more straightforward than in older property.
What we'd avoid here
- Fitting a moisture-sensitive finish over a slab that hasn't been tested, particularly in ground-floor rooms that have never had flooring lifted before.
- Assuming the whole ground floor is level — many slabs dip toward external walls or old hearths.
Levelling before anything else
Where a slab has dished or cracked over the decades, self-levelling compound is often needed before any new floor goes down, and skipping this step tends to show up later as an uneven or noisy finish.
