Choosing a grade honestly
Prime grade is uniform and calm and shows every scuff. Rustic grade has knots, sapwood and colour variation, which hides daily life and suits older properties. Most people who say they want prime actually want a natural grade once they see both on the floor.
We bring sample boards to the room rather than relying on a showroom display, because oak reads completely differently under Fife daylight than under LED spots.
Practicalities of a wide board
- Wide boards demand a flatter subfloor — dips show as rocking, not just gaps
- Glue-down eliminates the hollow sound wide floating boards can develop
- Wide boards move more across their width, so acclimatisation matters more
- Fewer joints means fewer places for grit to sit — genuinely easier to clean
