SPC rigid core: the practical middle ground

SPC gets recommended a lot now for busy kitchens and hallways, and once you understand what's in the core it's easy to see why: a dense stone-polymer composite base makes it far less prone to the swelling and denting that catches laminate out in wetter rooms.

What sets SPC apart from laminate

The rigid core is dimensionally stable and waterproof right through, not just at a surface film, which is why it copes with kitchen splashes and hallway grit far better than a laminate core.

Sound and feel underfoot

Rigid core floors can sound slightly hollow without an integral or separate acoustic underlay, worth factoring in for upstairs flats around Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes.

Fitting over uneven Fife subfloors

Because the core is thicker and stiffer than standard LVT, SPC bridges very minor subfloor dips better, though it still needs a properly flat base to click together without gapping.

Click-lock durability

The locking mechanism is generally more robust than budget laminate systems, reducing the risk of joints separating under furniture weight over time.

What's actually in a stone-polymer composite core

The core is a blend of ground limestone powder and PVC binder compressed into a dense, rigid board, which is why it's heavier per plank than standard LVT and noticeably stiffer to handle on site.

That density is what gives SPC its dimensional stability — it doesn't expand and contract with temperature the way a purely PVC-based LVT plank can, which matters in a conservatory or garden-room extension with a wider daily temperature swing.

Subfloor flatness still matters

A rigid core bridges very minor dips better than thin LVT, but it isn't a substitute for a properly flat subfloor; gaps under an unsupported click joint eventually lead to the lock working loose or cracking under repeated foot pressure, particularly at doorways where traffic concentrates.

Expansion gaps around the perimeter

Even a rigid, largely stable floor needs a small expansion gap at the walls and any fixed obstruction, hidden under skirting or a transition trim; SPC's stability reduces movement compared with laminate but doesn't eliminate it entirely across a full room's width.

Cleaning mistakes worth avoiding

  • Using solvent-based cleaning products that can dull or discolour the wear layer over time
  • Dragging heavy appliances or furniture across the surface instead of lifting them
  • Allowing grit to build up in entrance areas, which scratches the wear layer underfoot
  • Over-wetting mop water, which can seep into the click joints even on a waterproof core
  • Using scouring pads on stubborn marks rather than a manufacturer-approved cleaner
