Why some cleaning products dull the shine
Wax-based and oil-soap floor polishes are designed for older vinyl sheet or natural stone, and on modern LVT they build up in a hazy film over time that's genuinely difficult to strip back off. A pH-neutral floor cleaner and a well-wrung microfibre mop does the job LVT was engineered for — anything stronger is solving a problem that doesn't exist.
Grit is still the main threat
Even though the wear layer resists scuffs well, sharp grit dragged underfoot can scratch the surface over time, particularly on matt finishes where marks show more. Doormats at every external door and felt pads under furniture legs prevent the vast majority of visible wear.
A sensible cleaning routine
- Sweep or vacuum (hard-floor head, no beater bar) to remove grit before mopping
- Mop with a pH-neutral cleaner diluted as directed, not neat
- Use a well-wrung mop — LVT is waterproof but standing water can seep into seams
- Wipe spills promptly to avoid slip risk on the smooth surface
What cleaning can't fix
A gouge from a dragged appliance or a sharp stiletto heel is physical damage to the wear layer, and no cleaning product restores it — that's a repair or replacement-tile job. Cleaning also won't fix planks that have lifted at the edges from prolonged standing water finding its way under a seam; that points to a fitting or moisture issue worth having looked at.
Fife factor: sand, mud and underfloor heating
In coastal spots like Kinghorn and Burntisland, fine sand tracked in on shoes is genuinely more abrasive than typical garden soil, so a boot tray by the door pays for itself. Off the muddier rural roads around KY12, grit sits in shoe treads and drops off gradually across a hallway — a stiff mat catches most of it. LVT copes well with underfloor heating common in newer Duloch developments, but always keep within the manufacturer's maximum surface temperature; running it too hot over years can affect the adhesive bond at the seams.
